How to Measure AEO Performance: What Metrics to Track

Standard web analytics tools do not measure AEO performance well. Google Analytics tells you traffic and conversions. It does not tell you how many of your target queries return your content in a featured snippet, or whether Perplexity is citing you this month compared to last month.

This guide covers the metrics that actually measure AEO performance, the tools to track them, and how to build a simple monthly reporting framework.

The core AEO metrics

1. Featured snippet coverage. Measures how many of your target queries show your site in Position 0 in Google. Track this by maintaining a list of your fifty highest-priority question-intent queries. Check each one in Google weekly or use a rank tracking tool supporting featured snippet detection. SEMrush, Ahrefs, and Moz all track featured snippet positions alongside standard ranking data.

Target: increase the number of queries where you hold the featured position by a minimum of two per month during active AEO implementation.

2. AI citation frequency. Measures how often your brand or website is cited in responses from Perplexity, ChatGPT with web search, and Google AI Overviews.

Manual tracking: create a list of twenty to thirty relevant queries. Once per week, run these through Perplexity and Google. Once per month, run them through ChatGPT with web search enabled.

Tool-based tracking: Profound (withprofound.com) tracks brand mentions across AI platforms at scale. Otterly.AI monitors Perplexity specifically. These tools are the only practical option for tracking more than fifty queries consistently.

3. Google Search Console impression data for question queries. Filter your queries by those containing “how,” “what,” “why,” “when,” “where,” and “which” to isolate question-intent traffic. Track month-over-month changes in total impressions, average position, and CTR for question-intent queries.

4. AI share of voice. Measures what percentage of AI-generated answers on your topic include your brand compared to competitors. For the full guide to this metric see What Is AI Share of Voice.

Secondary metrics

Branded search volume. As AEO performance improves, branded search volume typically increases — users who encounter your brand in a featured snippet or AI citation often return to search for you directly later. Track in Google Search Console.

Schema rich result appearances. Google Search Console’s Enhancements section reports how many times your schema markup generated a rich result appearance. Track this for FAQ schema specifically.

Content engagement on AEO pages. High scroll depth and time on page on AEO-optimised pages suggest that users who click through from a featured snippet find the content genuinely valuable, reinforcing that page’s eligibility for that position.

Building a monthly AEO report

A practical monthly report takes approximately 30 minutes to produce.

Section 1: Featured snippet coverage — number of target queries with your site in the featured position this month vs last month.

Section 2: AI citation tracking — number of target queries returning your brand in AI results this month vs last month.

Section 3: Search Console question-query performance — month-over-month change in impressions and CTR for question-intent queries.

Section 4: Actions taken this month — new pages published, schema changes, content restructured.

Section 5: Actions planned next month — next priority pages to optimise based on current data.

What good AEO progress looks like

For a site implementing AEO for the first time on an established domain: two to five new featured snippet wins in the first month, an additional three to eight wins by month three, and first Perplexity citation appearances around weeks six to ten. The curve typically flattens after initial wins as you move from easy uncontested queries to harder competitive ones. At that point focus shifts to topical authority building and external citation acquisition.

FAQ

What metrics should I track for AEO?

The primary AEO metrics are: featured snippet coverage (how many of your target queries return your site in the featured position), AI citation frequency in Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, and zero-click impression volume from Google Search Console. Secondary metrics include organic click-through rate on AEO-optimised pages and brand mention frequency across AI platforms.

What tools track AI citations?

Tools that track AI citation frequency include Profound, Otterly.AI, AI Monitoring (AIM), and BrandMentions. Manual tracking via regular query testing in Perplexity and ChatGPT is free and effective for smaller query sets. Google Search Console tracks featured snippet impressions and clicks.

How do I know if my AEO is improving?

Track the number of featured snippet positions your site holds for target queries over time. Track AI citation frequency monthly. Monitor your Google Search Console impression data for question-intent queries. Increasing snippet coverage and citation frequency are the clearest indicators of AEO improvement.

How often should I check AEO metrics?

Featured snippet positions should be checked weekly during active implementation. AI citation frequency should be checked monthly. Search Console data should be reviewed monthly.
